Even from broken and fragmented pieces, a magnificent sound can emerge. The top of this violin is composed of 154 broken pieces of spruce—made from scrap. To give the instrument structural integrity from below, some of these pieces are fiber-reinforced. The back is made from wood with exceptionally deep figure. For the finish, we used (in addition to the traditional amber recipe) the South Indian resin known as dragon’s blood. The instrument has a powerful, very focused tone.
