World-renowned violinist Gidon Kremer with a kauri wood instrument
The kauri spruce from a New Zealand high moor. It is a great joy to dedicate the time I have left to this incredible wood. Who would have thought 50,000 years ago that this trunk would one day be recovered from the earth and transformed into sound today? It is a symbol of the power of resurrection. The earth has shaped this sound over the millennia. Now the tree is awakening to a second life.
Perhaps these instruments sound so extraordinary precisely because this very sense of reverence guides my hands at the workbench.
I am grateful for the appreciation of sound. I owe it to the wood and to my hands. Here is world-renowned violinist Gidon Kremer with one of the few instruments made from my kauri wood.
