Instruments Made from 50,000-Year-Old Wood

Schleske, Op. 345 (side view)

By a stroke of luck, I came across a kauri log over 50,000 years old from a New Zealand high moor several years ago. I am filled with gratitude and awe that I have been entrusted with a few pieces of this World Natural Heritage site to use in the construction of my violins. I owe the wood its immense, mature, and exquisite resonant qualities. A World Heritage site.

“I started learning to play the violin when I was seven, and then began my apprenticeship as a violin maker in Mittenwald at age 17. Even back then, I knew: Either I want to build violins that are better than Antonio Stradivari’s—or I want to know why that’s not possible.”

PURCHASE THE

Those who find their way to me aren’t simply looking for an instrument, but for a musical personality that will accompany them throughout their lives. That’s why I invite musicians to come meet me in person in the concert hall of my workshop.

Each instrument is a unique creation of sound that reflects my full It demands dedication. From sourcing the wood in the high-altitude mountain forests to the final polishing of the varnish, hundreds of hours go into creating pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind. This dedication limits the number of instruments that I, together with my colleagues, can complete each year in the quiet of the workshop.

“A healing sound always comes from silence; you have to love it so that the wood can express itself and, in the end, sing.”
