Philosophy

The perfection we seek is embodied in the harmony of opposites: warmth in the lower registers and brilliance in the higher registers come together as one in sound. Every instrument has its own personality because the wood has a say in the matter. To do justice to the wood while at the same time heeding the laws of acoustics—that is what mastery means. The wood gives me the grandeur of the sound. But I shape the timbres at the workbench.

This is how physics, craftsmanship, and music come together—mind, hand, and heart form a unified whole in sound.

The following texts explore this philosophy in greater depth.

In my books, too, I write about my philosophy of violin making.
